maison martin margiela, autumn/winter 2000/2001
A disused depot, belonging to the SERNAM, a goods shipping company of the SNCF, the French rail company, in the 18th arrondissement of Paris. An immobilised freight train of 12 cars stands along the loading bay. Each car is dressed as a small salon. Recorded birdsong fills the space before the beginning of the show. A white cotton runner carpet covers the middle of each car’s floor; a mirrored ‘Disco Ball’ reflects tiny particles of light throughout. Thirty-five gilded and white chairs are placed around the walls of the each carriage to seat the invited public. Other invitees look on from outside the train. Twenty-five women, their eyes obscured by a heavy fringe of hair matching their own hair colour, each wear an outfit of the collection. Some of the women wear miniature mirror balls as earrings. The women pass slowly from carriage to carriage walking before all of the invited guests. ‘Pink Room’ from the soundtrack of the television series ‘Twin Peaks’ is played loud during the passage of the twenty-five women throughout the train.
